Financial Controller

Premium Specialty Retailer
Now Hiring in Melbourne

The Brand |

An established Australian specialty retailer operating within the premium consumer electronics and audio space is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join its Melbourne-based team.

Representing a highly curated portfolio of internationally recognised brands, the business has built an enviable reputation for technical expertise, premium service and a genuine passion for its product.

Operating across bricks-and-mortar retail, eCommerce and distribution, the business continues to evolve and grow, creating an opportunity for a commercially minded finance professional to take greater ownership of the finance function and strengthen the systems, reporting and financial controls that will support its next stage of growth.

The Role |

This is a hands-on Financial Controller opportunity for someone who enjoys being close to the detail while also providing meaningful commercial insight to business leadership.

Working closely with the owners and senior leadership team, you will take ownership of the day-to-day finance function, ensuring the business has accurate reporting, strong controls and clear visibility across cash flow, profitability, inventory, margin and overall financial performance.

Importantly, this role is not simply about producing the numbers. You will be encouraged to identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen reporting and create greater efficiencies across the finance function and wider business.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Own the month-end and year-end accounting processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting

  • Prepare monthly management accounts, P&L, balance sheet and cash flow reporting

  • Lead budgeting, forecasting and ongoing financial planning

  • Manage cash flow and working capital requirements across the business

  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, reconciliations and financial records

  • Coordinate statutory reporting, tax, BAS and compliance requirements alongside external advisors and auditors

Commercial Finance & Business Partnering

  • Partner closely with business leadership to provide meaningful commercial analysis and financial insight

  • Analyse performance across retail, eCommerce, product categories and other key areas of the business

  • Provide visibility around sales, gross margin, operating costs and profitability

  • Support commercial decision-making through forecasting, scenario modelling and financial analysis

  • Identify financial risks and opportunities and translate these into clear recommendations for the leadership team

Inventory & Margin Management

  • Work closely with Operations, Purchasing and Warehouse teams to ensure accurate inventory valuation and reporting

  • Strengthen financial controls around stock movements, purchasing and inventory accuracy

  • Monitor stock holding, ageing, stock turn and working capital tied up in inventory

  • Analyse product and category margins and identify opportunities to improve profitability

  • Support landed-cost calculations across internationally sourced products, including freight, duties and foreign exchange impacts

Systems, Controls & Process Improvement

  • Review and strengthen financial controls, processes and reporting frameworks

  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline manual finance processes

  • Improve the quality, consistency and accessibility of financial and management reporting

  • Partner with the wider business to improve the flow and accuracy of financial information between Finance, Retail, eCommerce, Warehouse and Operations

  • Support the implementation and optimisation of finance and business systems as the organisation continues to scale

Leadership & Ownership

  • Take ownership of the finance function and ensure deadlines, reporting requirements and compliance obligations are consistently met

  • Manage and develop finance team members as required

  • Build strong relationships across the business and encourage greater financial understanding amongst non-finance stakeholders

  • Bring a proactive, solutions-focused mindset and identify opportunities to deliver meaningful improvements and quick wins

The Skillset |

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Financial Controller, Finance Manager or senior commercial finance professional who has operated within a retail, eCommerce, wholesale, distribution or inventory-led consumer business.

You will bring strong technical accounting capability alongside a genuinely commercial mindset, with the ability to move comfortably between the detail of month-end, reconciliations and compliance and broader conversations around margin, inventory, cash flow, profitability and business performance.

Experience within an environment carrying significant physical inventory will be particularly valuable, as will an understanding of international purchasing, landed costs, foreign currency and supplier payments.

Just as importantly, this business is looking for someone who wants to make an impact. You will be naturally curious, willing to challenge existing processes and motivated by the opportunity to improve systems, reporting and financial controls rather than simply maintain the status quo.

You will be comfortable operating within an entrepreneurial business where you can remain hands-on, work closely with ownership and see the tangible impact of the improvements you introduce.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established Melbourne business at a point where the finance function can play an increasingly important role in supporting its continued growth.
