Raw Materials Developer

The Brand |

In a confidential search and a newly created role – we are seeking a Raw Materials Developer to join a leading fashion business based in Sydney.

The Role |

This role is primarily responsible for researching, sourcing and managing the raw materials used in production for their collections. This role involves working closely with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure fabrics are developed for each collection and are high-quality, cost effective and sustainable.

  • Identify, source and test raw materials that will enhance product performance, reduce costs and/or meet sustainability goals. Assess the suitability of all new materials and ensure alignment with strategic direction for each collection and range.

  • Work closely with the design team and production team to support product development and bulk production timelines.

  • Ensure all fabrics meet quality and performance targets.

  • Create and/or assist in the development of custom artwork and prints.

  • Investigate and resolve any issues related to raw material quality and performance. Ensure any fabric substitutions are Identified and prepared early in the fabric development process.

  • Source and establish relationships with raw material suppliers. Ensure suppliers are briefed early in the process to ensure timeframes can be met.

  • Collaborate with the production team to negotiate pricing, terms (e.g. minimum order quantities etc.)

  • Monitor mill & supplier performance and ensure adherence to quality, cost and delivery standards.

  • Continuously research fabric trends and new composition fabrics prior to each season. Research and present any new fabric developments and innovations to the design team for consideration.

  • You’re a fabric specialist with an eye for innovation and a passion for quality.

  • You thrive in a fast-paced, design-led environment, working seamlessly with design and production teams to bring each collection to life through elevated, high-performing, and sustainable materials.

  • You’re skilled at sourcing and developing new fabrics, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring every material meets exacting standards for quality, fit, and finish.

  • You have a strong understanding of textile performance, cost, and sustainability, you balance creativity with commercial insight.

  • Curious and forward-thinking, you stay ahead of global trends, continuously exploring new fabric technologies and processes that enhance both design and responsibility.

  • You’re organised, proactive, and take pride in the details that help transform creative concepts into exceptional garments.

  • Degree or certificate in Textile Design, Development or Manufacturing.

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in textile or raw materials development, with quality and compliance responsibilities.

  • Strong knowledge of fabric testing, fabric performance standards and global material sourcing.
