Planned Holidays | Is It A Dealbreaker When Jobsearching

Negotiating your holiday when you're job searching | If you are Melbourne side like some of us - no doubt this time of the year has you dreaming of jetting off somewhere hot or for those of us living overseas finally reuniting with our families. But when it comes to job searching does a pre-planned holiday equal a dealbreaker? When done with consideration, tact, and grace – it doesn’t have to be!

Here are our top tips for navigating those conversations around extended annual leave so that you can get the dream job AND your dream holiday.

Should I tell a potential employer about my holiday during the interviews?

Yes – but we recommend you choose your timing wisely - a great Recruitment Partner should have asked you about this before you get to the interview stage with your dream company and can therefore support you with the timing around disclosing an extended holiday, or will potentially disclose this on your behalf.

When should I tell them?

A good rule of thumb if it’s a retail-based role - yes you need to tell them sooner rather than later as this has tangible impacts on the operations of their store; however, it’s much easier to consider what you might be prepared to accommodate when a company have already met you and understand the value you bring! So, consider bringing this up after you have met in person to ensure you are coming across as transparent. Its easy to bring this up when a potential employer starts talking about potential start dates.

How important is it to be transparent?

It's important that you reveal your intentions, even if no one has brought it up in the interview process - there is nothing stickier than negotiating backwards – remember you’re not asking for their permission—you’re simply telling them as an FYI. A company will make it clear if it’s a dealbreaker and should be able to provide you with a legitimate reason as to why.

Remember to |

Reaffirm your interest in the role and excitement about starting.

Prepare what you are going to say ahead of time.

Know that if it’s an issue – that’s ok, a business may legitimately not be able to support your extended holiday – it’s better to have that conversation upfront and the door is now ajar – ready for when the stars align!

So - Pack your bags ladies – holiday time!
